LYNN HAVEN, FL — The City of Lynn Haven is proud to announce a series of events in celebration of Black History Month. These events aim to celebrate the rich cultural contributions of the African American community. Banners are currently displayed throughout Sharon Sheffield Park to highlight prominent local and national black leaders who have influenced our nation and the local community.
The official birth of Black History Month activities in Lynn Haven began in 2017, when longtime resident and the former late Commissioner Leon Miller put a request before the city commission to host a Black History program. Since then, the city has grown its activities throughout the month of February.
To kick off Black History Month, the city is hosting a traveling exhibit called “Florida’s Got the Blues”. It will on display beginning February 10th from 4:30 PM – 7:00 PM in the Walter T. Kelley Chambers in City Hall, located at 825 Ohio Avenue. Afterwards, the exhibit will remain on display weekdays from 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM through February 18th. Tuesday, February 18th will also be the closing finale and reception of the exhibit and feature a performance by The Reverend Shawn Amos from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM. Amos, whose family owned and operated Famous Amos Cookie Company, is now “famous” as an American blues singer, harmonica player, songwriter, author, record producer and storyteller of the blues. Amos will perform experts of blues songs along with storytelling. This event is free and open to the public.
